MAKO SHARKS

shark blog pic

The Mako shark is a fierce predator and he tends to roam between the warm blue water

and the cooler water, just about the same place that we enjoy fishing, he is a very fast

swimming shark and he has no problem chasing down a Longfin Tuna .

The m.o. of the Mako is the same every time, take away the power source of the prey

species, the tail !

BLACK MARLIN TIME!!

The warm 22 degree blue water is moving south fast, very fast !

It will soon be time to put away the Tuna gear and bring out the “ Big guns “ ......... because those “ Big Blacks “  are on their way !

Sounds like it could be a quote from an era gone by, but it’s not of course, the big guns are the Marlin Rigs and the big blacks are in my opinion the most exciting fish to catch in the world’s oceans.... “Black Marlin “ ! ! !

And make no mistake the Black Marlin in this part of the world do get big, very big ! (but more of that later)

XMAS BREAK FOR THE YELLOWFIN

With the Yellowfin enjoying an extended Xmas break (only Neptune knows where) and the warm water currents rapidly moving to the inside marks , it's time to leave the Yellowfin Tuna gear in the tackle room and bring out the Tiagra 30's and the lighter spinning stix.

The Tiagra 30's have been freshly spooled with 30lb Ande tournament mono and the 8000 Saragossa’s spooled with 30lb Berkley braid.

At C.T.F.C we believe it is all about matching the tackle to the quarry, although this is much easier said than done it is a practise we are passionate        about and if it sometimes backfires then it’s not the end of the world !

In the hands of a competent angler a Tiagra 30w loaded with 30lb line can handle just about any Tuna we can present, it is going to take the angler a    helluva lot longer to land the fish than on a 50lb rig but that is just fine as there are not a lot of big Tuna around at the moment so if you do happen to     hook one enjoy the ride.

On the other side of that coin fighting an 18kg Longie on the light gear is great fun and an even battle for both parties.

LONG FIN TRIPLE HEADER!

The buzz that was created by the Monster Yellowfin Tuna that were around during the November Tuna Derby seems to have been reduced to a memory   and a few photos scattered around the walls of the Atlantic Boat Club.

There were only a few Yellows taken during December and those fish were taken in the early part of the month , so it seemed a little unfortunate for the hordes of both foreign and up country visitors that would have to “ make do “ with the smaller Longfin Tuna and Yellowtail that were still around.

Father and Son team of Jan – Hendrik and Neils from Holland didn’t seem to mind the lack of big Yellows as the action was fast and furious with the Longs on our last offshore  trip of 2012.

The action started with a double strike on the backlines and true to form the shoal was   held at the boat with the use of spinners and light chum, in fact, it wasn’t long before we  had a “ Triple header “ on the deck. (a triple header being three fish of the same species being  taken on backlines, bait and spinner).

The bonus for the day came in the form of a shoal of very nice yellowtail, average size fish in the 3 – 6 kg class, caught on light stix these fish can be as challenging to land as any of the Tuna species.

C.T.F.C, father and son team of Steve and Joe Potter would like to thank father and son team of Jan – Hendrik and Neils for a mutually GREAT day on the water, we look forward to fishing with you guys again!

SUMMER SOUTH EASTER

With 35 – 40 knots of South easter forecast for the next few days the Offshore fishing business will come to a grinding halt ! ! !

Time to get down and dirty !

The Offshore Tuna Fishing game is a tough business, not only for the hardy crews that man the charter boats but for the boats themselves . . .  a ding here and a knock there is all part and parcel of each and every trip.

The big wind that is forecast will certainly mean that Beluga will be mooring bound for at least 3 or 4 consecutive days , a perfect opportunity to get out the spit n polish and fix up those damaged latches and chipped pieces of gel coat, simply little jobs that just ensure a quality appearance for our next guests that step aboard !

Offshore charter fishing can be as intense or as laid back as YOU the client want to make it !

Cape Town Fishing Charters recently had the pleasure of taking two novice anglers to the deep to experience offshore fishing for the very first time, it was just one of those boxes that had to be ticked by this adventurous couple and Cape Town seemed like the perfect destination to do just that.

Check out the pics, they had the time of their lives !

BRADLEY TICKED THE BOX !

With the fish now well and truly settled in, it presents a GREAT opportunity to go target big Yellowfin Tuna , for many anglers that means putting a tick in the right box.

Often Anglers fish their whole life and can only dream of doing battle with one of the strongest fighting fish in the world’s oceans , that was certainly the case for Bradley a visitor from up country who was determined one day to tick the Yellowfin Tuna box and  “Cape Town Fishing Charters “  were expected to put him on that fish !

Running out to the deep across flat calm seas is always a pleasure , but running out to sea on a mission to catch a guy a big fish when you know darn well exactly where those fish are......, that is the best feeling in the world !

Approximately 4 hours after throwing the mooring lines Bradley was the proud owner of a 42kg Yellowfin Tuna , and needless to say the happiest angler on the ocean !

Chartering a boat, man alone is not a decision to take lightly but when it happens, and it does happen from time to time make sure you do it with          “Cape Town Fishing Charters”  because aboard Beluga you know we will do whatever it takes and go wherever we must go to catch YOU the client the fish you are looking for !

THE NOT SO ELUSIVE YELLOWFIN !

The Longfin and the Yellowfin Tuna are back in the Canyon in good numbers, Yellowfin up to 85kg's have been in the box in recent trips and the Longfin have been a respectable class of fish up to 30kg’s, great fish to catch on an Ashley Read mini half round with 15kg mono and a Saragossa 14000, I am referring to the Longfin off course !

We had the pleasure of taking another of our loyal guests out recently, a guy that needs no introduction to either the Longfin or the Yellowfin Tuna out there, needless to say with one of “ Cape Town Fishing Charters “  Tiagra 50w's loaded with 80lb tournament Ande strapped into his black magic Samson made short work of this 64kg bullet, 17 minutes to be exact ! Well done Sam, always a pleasure !
